Junk to be banned in school machines

As Children Now went to press, education secretary Ruth Kelly was expected to announce that healthy food will replace junk in school vending machines.

Her speech to Labour Party delegates today was due to say that fizzydrinks, chocolates and crisps will be banned and replaced with healthysnacks such as fruit, milk and bottled water.

The ban is one of a number of recommendations made to Kelly by theSchool Meals Review Panel. It is welcome news to the many campaignerswho have called for nutritional standards for school meals to apply tovending machine products.

Last week the Government called on local authorities to develop athree-year strategy for improving their school dinners.
