Narrowing the Gap aims to improve opportunities for vulnerable children. Lauren Higgs looks at some of its success stories.

In recent days, a weighty envelope has been landing on the desks of children's services leaders nationwide. Inside is the hefty Narrowing the Gap guidance booklet, stuffed full of findings from the two-year programme designed to improve the lives of vulnerable children.

At a time when professionals are under pressure to justify every penny spent, the guidance offers evidence-based advice on how to reduce inequalities.

Christine Davies, director of the Narrowing the Gap programme, is animated about the potential impact of the work. She says: "For the first time, we have brought together in one place both national and local evidence of the essential must-dos for effective leadership and governance of children's services."
