Jargon buster - Workforce Agreement Monitoring Group (WAMG)

1 min read
Where might you hear it? In a school staffroom

What does it mean? Pronounced "wam-jee", it is also known as the social partnership. This is a group with representatives from the English and Welsh governments and the nine school workforce unions who signed up to the National Agreement. WAMG exists to ensure that everyone sticks to the agreement.

A piece of jargon in its own right, the National Agreement was signed by the government, employers and unions in January 2003 as a commitment to raise standards in schools, while also tackling unacceptable staff workloads.

WAMG has played a critical role in school workforce reforms ever since its inception, including changes to teachers' pay structure, a review of school staffing structures, revisions to teachers' performance management, and new professional standards. It plays an integral role in informing government policy whenever there are implications for the school workforce.
