Jargon buster - TAMHS (Targeted Mental Health in Schools)

Where might you hear it: In schools

What does it mean? This is a three-year pathfinder programme aimed at improving mental health support for pupils, by focusing on relationships between schools, families and mental health experts.

The programme was launched in April 2008 across 25 local authorities in partnership with their primary care trusts (PCTs). Since then a further 55 authorities were chosen to roll out phase two, and the final 72 will deliver phase three from April next year.

A recent evaluation of the programme came back with some areas of concern. It appears that so far the relationship between health experts and schools has been a tricky one to forge, with only patchy success reported. According to the evaluation, child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) were too often seen by schools as a "separate service" to what the school offered itself.
