Jargon buster - SSEYCG (Sure Start, Early Years and Childcare Grant)

1 min read Early Years
Where might you hear it? In a meeting about local authority budgets

What does it mean? The SSEYCG is the money granted to each local authority by the government in order to fund all forms of services for early years children. The £4bn grant was announced in 2007, and was intended to be spread across three years. It has been earmarked by the government to go towards providing a children's centre in every community, outreach work with disadvantaged families, training the early years workforce and ensuring every authority is providing sufficient childcare.

The grant has been successful in funding more than 3,000 children's centres, and the government claims to be on course to meet its target of having 3,500 centres in place by 2010. However, there is concern among authorities as the grant will finish at the end of the 2009/10 financial year. This has left many people wondering whether children's centres will remain a priority.
