The new committee, set up by the Youth Work Training Board in Northern Ireland (a subcommittee of the Youth Council for Northern Ireland), and the National Youth Work Advisory Committee in the Republic of Ireland, will set standards for youth work courses run by higher education institutions.
At the moment, Northern Ireland has only one higher education institution that offers youth work qualifications while the Republic has several, according to John McCormick, director of youth work services at the Youth Council for Northern Ireland.
He said: "Any work that brings together the north and south will help both countries as they both have expertise that can be shared across the borders."
