Interview: The language instinct - John Bercow MP, chair, APPG onSpeech and Language Difficulties

2 mins read
It's a cold bright day outside the House of Commons' Terrace Pavilion room overlooking the Thames. Waiting outside is John Bercow MP. He is about to join a group of backbench MPs from all parties who are determined to highlight the plight of the 2.5 million children and adults with speech and language difficulties.

He doesn't have much time to talk, but it only takes a few minutes tosee why the Channel 4/Hansard Opposition MP of the Year has a reputationfor being "one of the greatest communicators in the House of Commons",as health minister Ivan Lewis puts it. His aim is to bring speech andlanguage difficulties "to the front of ministerial minds".

"Together with my colleagues, I intend to bang on and on about thesematters - in speeches, articles and oral questions - to the extent thatministers agree there is a problem and services must improve."

Partly due to the importance of early intervention, campaigning aboutchildren will form the majority of the group's work. Children are aboutto get a formidable new advocate.
