If you think inspections of children's services are about men in suits carrying clipboards and ticking boxes, prepare to be proved wrong.

Last week saw the official launch of the Lilac project, a new initiativetaking a very different approach to inspections.

Lilac (Leading Improvements for Looked After Children) is the brainchildof the charity A National Voice with support from the Fostering Network,the Social Care Institute for Excellence and the National Leaving CareAdvisory Service.

Uniquely the project, piloted in two local authority areas during thelast 10 months, has been led by care leavers and involved a team of 10young people, all with experience of care, inspecting children'sservices.

Project co-ordinator Lucinda Smith, who is also chair of the directorsof A National Voice, is a care leaver herself and says young people withexperience of the system can bring a wealth of knowledge and expertiseto the inspection process.
