Two years ago, Faye Whaley left school with big plans, none of which involved being the youngest councillor in the country by the age of 18.

"I was 16 and had planned a big summer. I had chosen my options for college: maths, accounting and economics," she says. "A couple of people went out one night in June to celebrate leaving school. A fight broke out and one of my friends was killed," she says.

That friend was Ben Kinsella. He was tragically murdered on the night of 28 June 2008, in Islington, north London. He was stabbed 11 times and his murder became another high-profile case of youth-on-youth knife crime. Whaley was not Kinsella's closest friend but she knew him well and the reaction to his death gave her a new perspective on life.
