
"Their toughest question was 'can you tell us a joke?' I'm hopeless at remembering jokes so I failed miserably," she recounts.
But on a more serious note Berelowitz explains that the children's main concern was about developing a rapport. "They wanted someone who could communicate with them and understand their needs," she says.
Berelowitz says she took the job at 11 Million, the office of England's children's commissioner, because "there is potential to build on the significant improvements for children and young people, and make Every Child Matters a reality".
Calling upon her experience in children's services, Berelowitz, who has replaced Rob Williams in the role, plans to "form strong alliances beyond" 11 Million. "We could certainly increase our profile," says Berelowitz. "I have already had discussions with some directors about the possibility of a regional commissioner. It's important we tap into school councils, especially as our themes this year are tackling violence, abuse and bullying."
