Intergenerational Volunteering Fund

Education Youth Work
What is it? Launched by Cabinet Office minister Liam Byrne earlier this month, the volunteer fund has been created to boost volunteering schemes that bridge the generation gap and bring younger and older people together. It plans to recruit 20,000 volunteers over the next two years.

How much is on offer? Around £3m has been made available, with £1.5m handed out during 2009/10 and the same amount awarded during 2010/11. Further details of the funding have yet to be released.

What will it fund? The government wants to see more schemes such as the Sixty Plus project in London, in which young people help older people with reading and computer skills.

Who can apply? Any group involved with young or older people's issues is eligible. In announcing the fund, Byrne indicated that those running shelters for people who are on their own at Christmas should also apply.
