The government has made £1.5m available for the programme. The money was flagged up in the government's play strategy, published at the end of last year, but is not part of the £235m announced in thestrategy that will will be invested in up to 3,500 improved play areas and 30 new adventure playgrounds.
The funding programme will run from April 2009 to March 2010, and all eligible third sector-managed adventure playgrounds may apply for up to £19,000 to update and modify their play spaces.
Mick Conway, Play England national practice manager, said: "Our community-run adventure playgrounds, supported by local families and communities, have been a national treasure for generations. This funding will help them make even more special places for children."
