Inspection: Joint framework is not representative

One of the authorities piloting the Government's vision for the joint inspection of children's services has expressed deep concern at the lack of emphasis on involving private- and voluntary-sector childcare providers.

Naomi Compton, head of Derbyshire County Council's early years and childcare service, voiced her concerns about the ongoing consultation on the new system at a conference on the role of the private sector in delivering the Government's national childcare strategy. She said: "There is little or no mention of the private or voluntary sector. If it is about partnership all sectors must be represented."

But children's minister Margaret Hodge said the inspection process was still in development and it was vital such issues were raised as part of the consultation.
