Inside story: Bolton Lads & Girls' Club Mentoring Project

What it is: A mentoring scheme offering vulnerable and disadvantaged young people one-to-one support.

Goal: To provide these young people with a stable and reliable adultrelationship through which they can also come into contact with a widerange of self-esteem and awareness raising group activities such asresidential weekends and group work sessions.

Funding: 185,000 a year from several sources including the BigLottery Fund, Home Office, Henry Smiths Charitable Trust, and theOglesby Trust. Contact: 01204 540 111

The Mentoring Project, an offshoot of one of the UK's oldest and biggestyouth clubs, began in 1997 with just 15 young people aged between eightand 21.

Today the scheme has a waiting list of 52 children and is working with106 who have all been referred by organisations such as social services,youth offending teams, schools, youth services, and parents.
