Dr Laurence Knott, a GP and named doctor for child protection in Enfield, said the Data Protection Act and the European Convention on Human Rights put great stress on the importance of confidentiality. But he thought the Children's Bill would say that GPs had to share information if it were in the interest of the child.
Knott is preparing a checklist for social workers to run through before they ask GPs for information, which he aims to put through his Area Child Protection Committee. "Social workers go on fishing trips (for information) and I don't think they appreciate the pressures that GPs are working under," he said.
