Information sharing: Committee to warn about relying on IT

The committee's chairman, Barry Sheerman MP, told Young People Now that the Department for Education and Skills needed to explain how a desire to improve information sharing in the Every Child Matters green paper had become an IT-focused project in the Children Act.

"Given the evidence that we have taken so far, I'd have doubts about a great deal of investment in IT systems and registers," said Sheerman.

"I'm increasingly coming round to the view that greater emphasis must be placed on the co-ordination of services, and greater professionalism and training. A quick-fix IT system shouldn't be a substitute for serious investment in frontline services."
