Informal learning is valid alternative

Informal achievement awards are a valid alternative to exams for those who do less well in school, research has claimed.

Researchers at the University of Teesside have found that Youth Achievement Awards, developed by youth work charity UK Youth, bring real benefits to young people.

The study found that measuring performance by the government's standard grade A* to C GCSEs does not work well for those experiencing difficult personal circumstances.

The Youth Achievement Awards differ by offering young people individual challenges that promote their achieve-ment levels.
