Feature: Schools: Another way to Educate

5 mins read Education Youth Work
UK Youth has secured more than 4m to roll out its Youth Achievement Awards in schools that work with young people who are in danger of leaving with no qualifications. Tim Burke finds out how this approach works in practice.

"It's different because it's about them, not about the needs of the education system."

That's headteacher Linda Bennett's verdict on the Youth Achievement Awards, which the school has been using to help young people who have previously struggled in mainstream schools.

Bennett is head of 7KS South Park Enterprise College in Scunthorpe, an independent school that works with about 77 young people from North Lincolnshire at risk of exclusion or who display a range of education and behavioural difficulties. The school's aim is not to return young people to mainstream schooling, but to give them the experience of achievement in areas that are enjoyable for them. Along the way they pick up practical skills, help to improve their self-confidence and are given the chance to reconnect with learning.
