Leeds was one of 15 disadvantaged areas to receive extra funding for its Positive Activities for Young People programme. Tim Burke finds out how it used the money.

Cassie Hudson does not lack ambition. After being inspired by the work of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, the 19-year-old from Leeds has decided that she wants to be a film and theatre director.

But Cassie's life has not been easy. She struggled at college and eventually dropped out. And she experienced problems at home, which led her to move into supported accommodation. The fact she is holding on to a dream and doing something about it is largely thanks to support she has received from the Breeze Arts Foundation, a project run by Leeds City Council through its Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) programme. "My life has been a bit all over the place, but the workers at the foundation have really been able to help," says Cassie. "Now I've been accepted on a Level 2 BTEC media course in September."
