In the News: Ease up tiger! Highly-strung mum sets teddies on fire if kids shun music practice

Teachers and nursery staff are used to pushy parents. But perhaps none as fearsome as "Tiger Mother" Amy Chua, whose hardline child-rearing philosophy has provoked a storm of controversy in America.

Chua, a law professor at Yale University, became a media sensation after writing a newspaper article headlined "Why Chinese mothers are superior" and the launch of a parenting manual, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, reported The Independent.

"It lists 'watching TV', playing computer games, taking part in school plays, and 'getting any grade less than an A', among the many things children should never be allowed to get away with," said the paper. "Also forbidden in her household is 'playing any instrument other than the piano or violin', 'not playing the piano or violin' and failing to be 'the number one student in every subject except gym and drama'."
