In the News - An alternative take on the week's media

The bewildering array of job titles in children's services is confusing enough for those who work in the sector. But recently Reading Council was taken to task by a local paper for the "barmy language" in its job adverts.

Reporters on the Reading Post's website were alerted by someone puzzled by vacancies including parent partnership and choice adviser, business support officer to virtual head children in care, community inclusion workers, and transformation project manager (reablement).

Hacks contacted the council's communications enablement staff - or press officers - to get the lowdown and were told the council was "committed to using accessible language". "While the council does understand the description of some of the jobs advertised may not be completely clear, the vacancies are important in supporting services for the benefit of residents," said a council spokeswoman.

Apparently a business support officer to virtual head children in care is basically "an administrator". Why didn't they say that in the first place?
