Back Page: In the news - An alternative take on last week's media

A year ago, the south London paper News Shopper appointed two "youth editors" for its online youth section. It was a welcome innovation, particularly in light of the fact the paper had, several years previously, devised the unhelpful "Shop A Yob" campaign, which was copied by The Sun.

Alison Moulds, 17, and Josh Tate, 15, tackled topics such as crime, education and the perils of teenage social life, frequently offering a fresh take on big news stories concerning children and young people. Their stint has come to an end but it's great to see the paper has decided not to abandon the experiment and has even come up with a scheme that throws the doors open for many more young writers.

News Shopper is now calling for articles from local young people and offering a monthly prize of £100 to be shared between the two best submissions. "Perhaps you are an outspoken young person who has lots of opinions you want to share. Or maybe you are interested in being a journalist and want to get a foothold by having some work published," said the paper. It would be brilliant if more local, regional and national papers followed its lead.
