"Pupils at a school in Devon have been banned from wearing goggles during swimming lessons - for health and safety reasons," revealed the Western Morning News. One mum said the goggle ban was "ridiculous". "We're going to be breeding a generation of namby pambies," complained Tracy Brock.
But it seems teachers at St Sidwell's Primary School in Exeter were simply following advice from the British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education. Its guidance warns goggles "can be a hazard and cause permanent eye injury". "Wet plastic is very slippery and incorrect adjustment or removal can lead to them slipping from the pupil's grasp, with the hard plastic causing severe injury."
