You might think your life is one long list of dull meetings and stressful deadlines, but spare a thought for today's five-year-olds.

The Daily Mail reported that parents are "over-diarising" the lives of their little ones. Play is no longer about climbing trees, making mud pies and having a bit of banter with your imaginary friend. Oh no. A survey of 2,000 families for the Persil Free Play initiative concluded that nowadays it's a tightly structured and timetabled world of "play opportunities".

Child behavioural expert Kris Murrin warned parents to back off and "give their children the space and permission to create their own fun". He also warned that kids don't like being corralled in this way and behave better when cut some slack. Hey, parents! Leave those kids alone!
