In Practice: Know how - Gypsy, Roma and Traveller families

2 mins read
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller families are among the most vulnerable in the UK.

Infant mortality, childhood illness and child accidents are more common among these groups. Other issues include low school attendance and educational achievement. Children's centres and schools can play a vital role in supporting these families, but they must take a sensitive and flexible approach.

Outreach is important but it should be used to bring families into mainstream services. This might not be easy but setting up permanent services on Traveller sites risks making families more isolated and excluded.

Be flexible. Every family is different so work with their individual needs. Some families may be highly mobile, so will require a different approach to those based on permanent sites. You can't take a blanket approach - what works brilliantly with one family may not work with others.
