Objectives Afghans make up the third largest refugee community in theLondon Borough of Barnet. But it is a relatively new community that hasdeveloped over the last decade.
In order to support Afghan children in national curriculum subjects andgive them an opportunity to learn their mother tongue and understandmore about their culture and heritage, the Afghan Association runssupplementary schools every Saturday. There are an estimated 5,000supplementary schools in England, which tie in closely with the extendedschools agenda.
What was done Having established where a large number of Afghan childrenwere going to school, the Afghan Association worked with thesemainstream schools to set up and run the supplementary programme.
