In Depth: Support for troubled families and first-time parents
The promise to turn around the lives of 120,000 troubled families will be a litmus test for the success
of this government and indeed for Prime Minister David Cameron himself. First announced following last summer’s riots, the ambition is bold, and one that will need serious, significant and sustained action, as well as backing from the entire community and all levels of government.
Plans for the project are already under way. In the coming weeks, local authorities are due to report on the numbers of troubled families in their areas.
Action plans will follow, highlighting the need to link a growing number of funding streams, including additional funding from the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Communities and Local Government, with funding from local authorities themselves. Alongside these long-term plans, work has already begun, demonstrated by successful pilots in local authorities including Hertfordshire and the Working Families Everywhere campaign.
