His proposal to apply a "family test" to all domestic government policies was a primary recommendation of 4Children's Family Commission inquiry. If enforced, it will mark a significant step towards ensuring that all future policies strengthen families. The pledge to turn around the lives of 120,000 troubled families is also welcome, although there are many more families beyond this figure who also need help to nip potential problems in the bud.
The commitment required to help families with complex needs should not be underestimated. It will require a major plan of action, backed by time and resources. We need a revolution in the way we support and strengthen families, which turns around problems now and doesn't wait for a crisis.
