IN DEPTH: THE URGENT NEED FOR INTEGRATED WORKING

Research from the Association of Directors of Children's Services suggests that a third of councils have merged adult and children's services management structures.

While some believe this might improve integrated working, others, including Professor Eileen Munro, warn of a dilution of focus on children's needs. Either way, the challenge of providing integrated services on the frontline must remain a priority.

Around 2,800 children are in care because of parental illness or disability, according to the recently published statistics on children in care in England. This is a manifestation of a system that still fails to work in a sufficiently integrated way, leading to family break-up and additional expense for the taxpayer.
