The council is drawing up a list of measures to help it identify exactly how activities are benefiting individual children, young people and parents.
Sue Easterbrook, senior research and information officer at the council, told CYP Now the project will help ensure the activities run by the council and its partners contribute to the five Every Child Matters outcomes.
"At the moment the information we get only tells us what is being delivered and to who, but it doesn't help us to identify what impact a children's centre or extended schools project is having," she said.
"It could be the case that a project working with just one person for an hour is having a massive impact while one catering for 20 people for several hours a week is having relatively little. At the moment we don't know and if we're to improve outcomes it is crucial we can record this information in a systematic way."
