1 min read
The UK's children's commissioners are developing a set of policy proposals as part of a wider effort to improve the treatment of child immigrants.

The commissioners also intend to fund a study examining alternatives todetaining children who are or are thought to be illegal immigrants.

The moves follow a report on Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre byEngland's commissioner Al Aynsley-Green, who visited the centre lastOctober.

The four commissioners, led by Aynsley-Green, now plan to increasepressure on the Government to ensure children are treated better by theimmigration system. With support from Barnardo's and the RefugeeCouncil, the commissioners are creating an action plan that will callfor improvements in the treatment of immigrant children facingdeportation.

Aynsley-Green said the document is likely to urge the Government toensure it knows children are not being sent back to dangerous situationsand to end the use of Section 9 orders, which can result in the childrenof illegal immigrant families being taken into care.
