Ignorance keeps children locked up

1 min read Social Care Youth Justice
Children are being locked up in secure accommodation unnecessarily because professionals don't understand the relevant regulations, experts have warned.

When a child is placed in a secure children's home to protect theirwelfare, the placement must be reviewed at least every three months. This secure accommodation review looks at whether the placement is stillnecessary and whether all the criteria for placements are met.

But Salli Glover, learning consultant at Voice, a provider of trainingfor secure accommodation reviews, said: "What we have seen more and moreof is people from our organisation going along to these reviews andhaving to educate other people present before the proceedings evenstart.

"It is concerning to see unlawful decisions being made and childrenbeing locked up when there isn't a need for it just because people don'tunderstand the regulations properly."
