Hughes: Youth policy 'stopped'

Youth Work
The Department for Education (DfE) has "virtually stopped" all work on youth services, according to former children's minister Beverley Hughes.

In an exclusive interview with CYP Now, Hughes, who is now a member of the House of Lords, said she is concerned that DfE staff who worked on youth policy under the last administration are now being made redundant.

"The Aiming High for Young People programme and the strands around first-class youth facilities, youth leadership, positive activities for young people - all of that has stopped," she said, warning that this may filter through to local authorities.

"If we're not careful we'll be back to where we were in the 1980s and 90s, when youth services were very, very patchy indeed and a low priority for everybody," she said.
