Hub model gets sector backing

4Children has come up with a plan that would carve out a clearer social care focus for children's centres.

There has been much debate recently about the role children's centres should play in the children's services landscape.

Earlier this year, the education select committee concluded the wide variation in services was making it difficult to identify a common purpose for children's centres and called on the government to address this by giving a clearer lead on what they should deliver.

Now charity 4Children has come up with a plan to address this identity crisis by proposing to convert children's centres into children and family hubs, extend-ing their reach to all children and young people under 19.

Under the plans, the hubs would add social care, health visitor and GP services to children's centres' existing offers, providing, the charity says, much more integrated and co-ordinated support to families.
