Inspired by a US initiative, a community project is tackling violence by young people.

Project

Violence Interruption Project

Purpose

To prevent violent deaths and injuries among young people in Waltham Forest

Funding

£219,000 a year from a range of organisations including Tudor Trust, Eranda Foundation, Lloyds TSB Community Foundation and Wates Foundation

Background

Youth worker Pam Hothi was in despair at the spiralling number of retaliatory violent attacks among young men on the streets of Waltham Forest, east London. A peak in violent incidents in 2010 spurred her into action. "I was fed up and frustrated and knew something had to change," she recalls. "And I believed there was nothing in the country addressing this."

Hothi heard about US charity Ceasefire Chicago, which was showing success in reducing gun and gang-related deaths through a programme of "violence interruption", and after visiting the charity, she decided to replicate the programme in Britain.
