Barnsley's Having a Baby project provides extensive support to increase the wellbeing of local children, parents and families

Project Having a Baby

Purpose To provide all-round antenatal and postnatal support to increase the wellbeing of parents, children and families

Funding £50,000 in 2011/12 and again in 2012/13 from public health, which was part of NHS Barnsley when the project began, but has since transferred to Barnsley Council

Background Local authority, health and voluntary sector colleagues in Barnsley wanted to create a more effective programme of postnatal and antenatal support for parents, so they spent years developing a new approach, called Having a Baby.

“We wanted a more holistic approach that prepared people for becoming a parent and the reality of having a baby,” explains Cathy Utley, health settings manager for 0 to 19s. “Traditional parent education covers labour and the first couple of days, but does not look at the emotional impact.”
