Housing: Shelter starts youth behaviour scheme

Housing charity Shelter is putting together a programme for 14- to 17-year-olds as part of an existing pilot project to prevent families being evicted.

The Shelter Youth Inclusion Project, which launched in Rochdale in October 2002, has identified 14- to 17-year-olds as the most challenging age group served by the scheme's workers.

The workers provide home-based support to households with children under 18 that are at risk of eviction because of alleged antisocial behaviour.

The project works with the families for up to a year to improve relations within the families and with neighbours and put them in touch with services.

The project has worked with 62 households in Rochdale in its first two years and so far boasts a 100 per cent success rate in preventing evictions.
