The Youth Homelessness Strategy for 2007-2010 aims to foster closer work between children's services and housing to prevent and reduce youth homelessness.
The strategy has five core objectives, including addressing the underlying causes of youth homelessness by improving access to learning and employment, and tackling antisocial behaviour. It was developed by a working group with representatives from the voluntary, housing and children's sectors.
A survey carried out in Brighton in 2005 found 40 per cent of young people questioned had been homeless at one time, and 45 per cent were living in inadequate or overcrowded accommodation.
David Hawker, director of children's services at Brighton and Hove, said: "The strategy is to help provide the right sort of services in addition to housing." Plans include joint training programmes for housing and children's services workers. An officer will be appointed for the lesbian and gay community.
