Hospital safeguarding breaches likely to rise

More hospitals could fall foul of safeguarding standards as a result of Lord Laming's report on child protection, a leading figure at the health and social care regulator has said.

Sue Eardley, head of children's strategy and safeguarding at thenewly-launched Care Quality Commission (CQC), said the death of Baby Pmeans the spotlight is currently on how NHS trusts meet their childprotection obligations.

By the end of last week, every NHS organisation had to declare theircompliance with child protection and safeguarding standards, with theresults due to be published by 22 May.

Last year, the overall compliance rate was 97 per cent, although Eardleysays it is unclear what effect the publication of Laming's report willhave on this.

"We may get an increase in declarations (of non-compliance) as a resultof the increased focus - we don't know," she said.
