Homophobic bullying

1 min read Education
A report by LGBT Youth Scotland has highlighted how children's professionals don't know enough about issues affecting gay young people (CYP Now, 25 June-1 July). Alison Bennett examines the progress being made.

ENGLAND

The Department for Children, Schools and Families published Safe to Learn: Embedding Anti-bullying Work in Schools, Preventing and Responding to Homophobic Bullying in Schools in January this year. It was co-written by gay equality campaigners Stonewall to help schools tackle homophobic bullying.

The guidance is aimed at school governors, heads, teachers and other school staff and contains practical information, including lesson plans on how to prevent and respond to homophobic bullying.

It recommends ensuring anti-bullying policies take homophobic bullying into account and address staff training needs. It says all staff should know how to react. SCOTLAND

The Scottish government is funding the development of the Equal Opportunities in Education: Guidance on Dealing with Homophobic Incidents and associated training materials.
