Help to engage play charities

The government will issue draft guidance next month to tackle concerns that councils are overlooking local charities in the delivery of play facilities.

Play England, together with the Department for Children, Schools andFamilies (DCSF), will publish a "draft toolkit" in August to support thedevelopment of community-led projects.

A DCSF spokeswoman said: "We welcome comments from practitioners acrossthe country as to how it can be improved to ensure the final version isan invaluable resource."

The government's 235m investment in 3,500 new or developed playareas was always conditional on voluntary sector involvement. Councilswere reminded of this via a government memo in March, after CYP Nowrevealed many voluntary organisations were being bypassed in thedevelopment of new play spaces.
