The charity offers support through a helpline, web site, email and meetings held in London. The helpline is open from 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
The web site offers information on the different forms of gender variation and the difficulties in obtaining support.
Mermaids' members are mainly parents and young people, but it also aims to raise awareness of the issue among professionals such as teachers, doctors and social workers, as well as the general public.
Mermaids will offer help to a young person whether or not they have the support of their family.
