Help From ... Disability Equality in Education

The charity provides training for schools and local authorities in how to include children with disabilities in the classroom and the curriculum.

Established in 1992, it has a network of 160 trainers who advise teachers on measures to keep disabled people in mainstream education. It costs schools 1,500 to hire a trainer for a day.

Disability Equality in Education's role has expanded since it launched its Reasonable Adjustment Project last September in response to Government guidelines that oblige schools to make "reasonable adjustments" to ensure disabled pupils are not treated less favourably, without justification.

The Department for Education and Skills awarded 250,000 to the organisation to identify and disseminate good practice for the project. The charity also receives 160,000 from the Community Fund to develop its trainer network.
