Health: YoungMinds pushes for work in schools

Education Health
Schools can play a vital role in identifying children suffering from mental health problems, according to the vice-chair of trustees at YoungMinds.

Joan Baxter, who is also a consultant for the charity, told a seminar on children's mental health that schools can also help reduce the stigma attached to mental illness by providing support services on site.

"If we can enable schools to provide mental health support, then it's delivering it in a non-stigmatised way," she said. "Schools are an ideal place to identify children's additional needs."

The Children's Mental Health - Everybody's Business seminar took place last week and was organised by the Local Government Information Unit and the Children's Services Network.
