Health: Young worry most about body image

1 min read Health
Young people are more concerned about body odour and self-esteem than the effects of drugs and cigarettes, a survey has found.

According to the research, commissioned by the Association for Young People's Health (AYPH) and carried out by Ipsos Mori, the issues young people felt important are not necessarily the same as those adults would prioritise. Seven out of 10 respondents to the survey said body odour, self-esteem, acne, spots, nutrition, diet and contraception were their most important health issues.

The survey of 14- to 19-year-olds asked about services for teenagers and where young people go for health advice.

Health services within schools received a mixed reaction. Four out of 10 young people questioned said they had never seen their school nurse. A third felt their school could do more to support pupils on health issues. One 14-year-old girl said: "I don't feel my school does keep me informed on health issues."
