Health: Surgery - Quality of care hit by competition

A group of expert surgeons has warned increasing competition between hospitals is putting the quality of children's care in jeopardy.

A report by the Children's Surgical Forum, led by the Royal College ofSurgeons, says that reforms to current policy are creating a"disincentive for hospitals to collaborate".

Reforms such as payment by results can make it difficult for parts ofnetworks to get reimbursement, it says, adding: "These reforms shouldnot be allowed to jeopardise provision of safe local care forchildren."

Children's surgery should be commissioned separately from other types ofsurgery and the tariff should be increased to help sustain localservices, authors recommend.
