The city, which has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in England, wants to develop a "strong policy and delivery framework" to support schools in delivering SRE.
Charlotte Bemand, who has just been appointed Southampton's teenage pregnancy co-ordinator said: "From a young age, children need to be taught about friendships, family and peer relationships so they can translate these skills to their relationships as young people and adults."
Southampton City Youth Parliament has already been asked for its views. "Young people in Southampton told us that they wanted to cover expectations surrounding relationships, dealing with peer pressure, that it's okay to delay having a sexual relationship and the importance of knowing and trusting your partner," said Bemand.
