Health: Social class factor in smoking rates

Fit for the Future?, which is launched today, surveyed 1,000 14- to 25-year-olds. A third were from deprived communities and involved in The Prince's Trust, a third were from disadvantaged groups but not involved with the trust and a third were not from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The report found 50 per cent of disadvantaged young people smoke regularly as opposed to 24 per cent of non-deprived.

A spokesperson for the trust said: "If young people on the scheme feel responsible and are working towards a goal, they will try harder to avoid smoking, drinking and drug misuse."
