In a report published this week, Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, the association raises concerns about binge drinking by teenagers and drinking in the early stages of pregnancy. It notes that in 2002-03 there were 128 cases of FASD birth defects, up from 95 in 2000-01.
Diana Whitmore, chief executive of the Teens and Toddlers project in London, said: "The young women we teach are often really shocked about it."
