Health News: Treatment - Schools are failing to give medicines

Schools are the main area where problems with children taking medication occur, according to a survey of parents.

The survey was conducted by disabled children's charity Contact a Familyfor the children's prescribing team at Connecting for Health, the NHS'sIT programme.

Parents taking part highlighted several problems with schools includingmedicines being given to the wrong children or being lost. The parentsalso said some schools were unable to administer medicine at all.

Sheila Davies, paediatrics project officer at Contact a Family, said shewas surprised that the bulk of the feedback from the 50 parentsquestioned centred on problems with schools. But she added that guidancefor schools on administering medicines, released last April and earlierthis year, needed more time to take effect.
